The Trenton girl's and boy's varsity basketball teams both fell behind by double digits early in their games on Tuesday night at Lawson, and despite a number of spirited rallies, particularly from the Lady Bulldogs, THS went down to defeat to the host Cardinals, 51-39 in the girls contest and 50-26 in the boy's game, in contests broadcast on Hot Country Z 101.7 and www.kgozfm.com.
For the second straight game, the state-ranked Lady Bulldogs fell behind quickly in a road-test against a KCI Conference opponent. On Saturday, it was Hamilton's Elsie Greenwood sizzling the nets for 35 points. On Tuesday, Lawson sophomore point guard Kerstin Huffman came out of the gates quickly, scoring 13 of her 19 points in the first quarter in the Lawson win. Lawson came into the game "receiving votes" in the latest Class 3 coaches poll, with Trenton entering at #5. MaKayla McNeely added 14 points and Janee Kassanavoid 12 for LHS. Avery Whitaker led THS with 11 points.
Twice in the game, once in the second quarter, and once at the end of the third quarter, Trenton rallied to within four points of Lawson, only to have their efforts come up short.
The Trenton boys were cold throughout their game at Lawson, managing only 26 points in a 24-point loss to the Cardinals. Spencer Wood led Lawson with 20 points. Trenton's leading scorer was Colby Larson with eight. Trenton's boys have lost three games in a row, and sit at 11-9.
Trenton will host Milan in a TRIO of games on Thursday night from the THS Gymnasium. There will be a JV girls game at 5:00, followed by a varsity girls and varsity boys game.
