Sports : Mercer sweeps Milan Tournament titles

The North Mercer girls and boys basketball teams won championships in the Milan Tournament on Saturday night, with the Lady Cardinals taking the Milan title for the FOURTH straight year, and the boys taking the first-place hardware for the first time since 2001.

The Lady Cardinals, ranked #2 in the state for Class 1 girls, survived a test from Brookfield and won by a score of 69-55. The Mercer boys defeated Linn County by a score of 69-59. Third place went to the Newtown-Harris boys, 51-47 over Green City.

In other tournament championships, the Hamilton girls won the Lawson Invitational by defeating Lawson 60-53. West Platte won the boys division at Lawson by downing Lawson 55-43.

The Cameron girls and East Buchanan boys won the Bill Burns Classic at Lathrop. The Lady Dragons defeated Maysville by a score of 58-33. The East Buchanan boys beat the host Lathrop Mules 38-26.

The Southwest Livingston girls and the Braymer boys are champions of the Braymer Invitational. The Southwest girls beat Braymer 67-31. The Braymer boys toppled Southwest by a score of 63-35.

The Kansas City Lutheran girls beat DeKalb 45-39 and the DeKalb boys beat Kansas City Lutheran 49-44 to win titles at the Osborn Invitational Basketball Tournament.
