KTTN/KGOZ Sports : North Mercer wins HDC doubleheader at Newtown-Harris

Just 24 hours after a decisive victory over Hardin-Central at NCMC Holiday Hoops, the North Mercer boy's basketball team returned to the floor, this time playing at Newtown-Harris in an HDC Conference contest on Thursday night.

The Cardinals won for the EIGHTH time this season (their record is 8-2) with a 78-64 victory. In the girl's game that preceded the boy's contest, the Lady Cardinals cruised to a win against an overmanned Newtown-Harris Lady Tigers squad, 78-23.

Elsewhere on Thursday night, Grundy R-5 and Northwestern split a doubleheader, with the Lady Panthers, despite a season-high 28 points from Elizabeth Novak, falling to the Lady Eagles by a score of 46-42. Sara Benedict had 16 points for Northwestern. The Grundy R-5 boys, behind a balanced scoring effort led by 17 points from Brody Hatcher, beat Northwestern, 65-55. Clayton Radcliff had 15 points, Destin Gann 14, and Mason Larson 12 for Grundy R-5. Curtis Huffman led Northwestern with 20 points.

In Holiday Hoops from North Central Missouri College, Tina-Avalon and Novinger split games in the final two contests for this year's event. The Tina-Avalon girls won by a score of 41-26, with the Novinger boys taking a 43-35 win over the Dragons.

In scores from the Marceline Tournament, the Bevier girls won a consolation semifinal over Higbee, 44-36, with the Keytesville boys winning a consolation affair against Higbee 42-33. Keytesville will play Milan in the boy's consolation final at 5:30 on Friday night, in a game to be covered LIVE on Hot Country Z 101.7 and www.kgozfm.com.

The Glasgow girls and boys won semifinals against Macon County/Bucklin, advancing the Yellowjackets into Saturday night's championship games opposite the host Marceline girls and boys. Glasgow won the girl's semifinal against the Lady Raiders, 57-29, with the Glasgow boys beating the Raiders, 55-16. The Milan Lady Wildcats will play Macon County/Bucklin for THIRD PLACE in the Marceline Tournament on Friday night at 7:00, also on Hot Country Z 101.7 and www.kgozfm.com.
