KTTN/KGOZ Sports : Trenton sweeps Brookfield in Courtwarming doubleheader
Posted by Tom on 2013/1/4 10:00:00 (211 reads) News by the same author

The Trenton Lady Bulldogs won for the 10th time this season, riding a 26 point, 19 rebound effort from senior Avery Whitaker to a 60-46 victory against the visiting Brookfield Lady Dogs. Whitaker's play boosted a THS squad that had its depth challenged by foul trouble from double-double machine Mikaila Capeder, who was held to four points and fouled out with three minutes to play.

Trenton started slowly in the contest, falling behind by a score of 12-5 midway through the first quarter, however senior forward Megan Sole broke out of a scoring slump in the first quarter, scoring all eight of her points in that time frame. Following a timeout by Coach Brian Upton, the Lady Bulldogs exploded on a 14-0 run, turning that 12-5 deficit into a 19-12 lead. Trenton never trailed again.

Scotlin Hurley had 11 points in the victory for Trenton, a 10-1 basketball team ranked #4 in Missouri's latest MBCA Class 3 state poll.

Trenton is a #1 seed in next week's South Harrison Tournament in Bethany, and will play #8 seed Ridgeway in the quarterfinal round on Monday afternoon at 4:30. Brookfield, in falling to 6-3 on the season, was led by 15 points from guard Miranda White and 12 points from fellow guard Alisa Frey.

The Trenton boys battled Brookfield in a close game for the first 1 1/2 quarters, before 'putting their foot down' and cruising past the visiting Bulldogs by a final score of 69-41. The win improves the THS Bulldogs to 8-4 on the season, with the South Harrison Tournament on the horizon. Trenton is a #3 seed in that tournament (behind #1 seed South Harrison and #2 Putnam County). Trenton will play in the late quarterfinal game on Monday night, in an 8:30 tipoff against #6 seed Northeast Nodaway.

Colby Larson, in the win against Brookfield, led Trenton with 14 points, a scoring mark matched by senior forward Austin Taull. Chase Tolson had 12 points in Trenton's most lopsided "home court win" of the season. For Brookfield, Dean Gall had 15 points and Matt Neeley 11.

Between games, Trenton High School seniors Austin Taul and Megan Sole were named as 2013 THS Courtwarming King and Queen. Thursday night's games were broadcast on KTTN FM 92.3 and www.kttn.com, and video-streamed on "Internet TV" from www.kttn.com.
