KTTN/KGOZ Sports : Meadville wins Holiday Hoops battle against North Mercer

The unbeaten and state-ranked Meadville Eagles played a dominant floor game, controlling the boards and hitting 10 three-point field goals as a team, in defeating North Mercer in a boy's basketball game on Wednesday night at the Ketcham Community Center in Trenton, 69-45.

The game was billed as a boy's showdown of two of the top squads in the region, but the Eagles quickly jumped on the Cardinals, going out to a 17-4 lead less than four minutes into the first quarter. North Mercer's rallies throughout the game would bring the Cardinals to within shouting distance of Meadville, but never close enough to truly threaten the lead.

After a scoreless first quarter, Meadville senior guard Derek Smith scored 12 points in the second on his way to a Meadville-leading 22 point night. T.J. Schmitz had 17 points, Cade Shiflett 12, and Kolton Friesner 10 for Meadville. North Mercer, in falling to 5-2 on the campaign, had Colton Hartley with 25 points and Caleb Wyatt with 12.

That boy's game was broadcast locally on KTTN FM 92.3, as was a girl's basketball game between the Princeton Tigers and Meadville Eagles. A jump shot by Princeton's Paige Phillips with 31 seconds remaining was the difference, with Princeton earning the 47-46 win over the Eagles. Nancy Berwanger had a superb night for Princeton, scoring a game-high 31 points, while junior Haley Fitzpatrick paced Meadville with 23 points.
