The Meadville Eagles are off to a strong start to the 2012-2013 basketball season, winning last week's Northwestern Invitational Basketball Tournament in Mendon, taking all three games by double digit final margins.

Meadville beat Linn County in Saturday night's championship game by a score of 55-44, with Derek Smith playing spectacular basketball for the Eagles, scoring 30 points in the win. Linn County, in falling to 3-1 on the season, was led by Josh Allen with 14 points.

Meadville beat Northwestern in Thursday night's semifinal, 66-52, and Bosworth in the quarterfinals on Tuesday night, 84-24. Linn County, in its second place finish, advanced with a 73-43 quarterfinal win over Brunswick and a semifinal victory over Bucklin/Macon County. Bucklin/Macon County's boys won third place over Northwestern, 48-47.

The fifth-seeded Bucklin/Macon County girls sprung a huge upset in the Northwestern Tournament, downing fourth-seeded Linn County in the quarterfinals, 34-28, top-seeded Meadville in the semifinals, 42-37, and second-seeded Hale in the title game, 42-39. Northwestern beat Meadville in the girl's third place game by a score of 28-27.

The Meadville girls and boys, headed in opposite directions coming out of the Northwestern Tournament, will continue their seasons on Tuesday night, traveling to Atlanta High School for a 6 o'clock doubleheader.

The Milan girls finished their week at the Novinger Tournament with a 2-1 record. Playing in the third place game against LaPlata on Saturday afternoon, the Lady 'Cats won by a score of 36-31, with senior guard Hannah Sanders scoring 18 points. Scotland County's Lady Tigers beat Green City in the championship game 55-24.

The top-seeded Novinger Wildcats won the boy's championship game over Scotland County, 55-54, while LaPlata routed Atlanta in the third place game 66-37. Milan beat Brashear in the seventh place game on Friday night, the Wildcats first win (in their third game) of the 2012-2013 boy's basketball season.
