The Penney High School Hornets are one win away from their third state championship in four years, after walloping Salisbury in the Class 1 state semifinals by a score of 48-0.

Penney moves into the Class 1 state title game at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis on Friday afternoon at 4:15 to take on the traditional power from Valle Catholic High School out of Ste. Genevieve. Valle Catholic advanced with a 48-18 semifinal win last weekend against Tipton. Hamiton won the Class 1 state championship in 2009, and then repeated as state champion, this time in Class 2, in 2010. Last year, the Hornets were bumped out of the playoffs in the state quarterfinals by eventual runner-up Higginsville.

The Class 2 state championship game will be played on Saturday afternoon at 2:15, with defending state champion Lamar taking on the Blair Oaks Falcons. Last weekend, Lamar destroyed Caruthersville 69-12 while Blair Oaks outscored Holden 46-32 in the state semifinals.

In Class 3, the long-awaited championship showdown between top-ranked John Burroughs and second-ranked Maryville is set, after the Spoofhounds blasted California 42-7 in the state semifinals, while John Burroughs defeated Monett 28-6. The Maryville-John Burroughs state title game will be Friday at 1 o'clock at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis.

In Class 4, Helias Catholic High School of Jefferson City meets the long-time powerhouse from Webb City. Helias beat Harrisonville last Saturday 17-7, while Webb City walloped St. Mary's of St. Louis 47-7. The Class 4 state championship game will be Saturday morning at 11 o'clock in St. Louis.

In Class 5, the state final will see Fort Osage High School of Independence battling Kirkwood on Friday night at 7:30, while in Class 6, Blue Springs takes on Francis Howell on Saturday night at 5:30.

The Stanberry Bulldogs will be in Friday morning's eight-man state championship game, playing North Andrew. Stanberry advanced last Friday night with a victory over Rock Port, while North Andrew won at Southwest Livingston. The eight-man championship game starts this year's "Show Me Bowl" on Friday morning at 9:30.
