A fire on Saturday night destroyed a car along Northwest Third Street just west of the Trenton city limits. The Highway Patrol said the vehicle previously had been involved in an accident at that location, and the driver left the scene. The driver's name was not immediately determined.
The Patrol said the eastbound car began to skid, went off the right side of the road, and hit a tree. The investigating officer indicated the fire apparently started when the driver, in an effort to get the car back on the road, apparently revved the engine, catching grass and leaves under the vehicle on fire.
Damage to the car (before the fire) was listed as minor. The incident is under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
Grundy County Rural Fire Department Spokesman Delbert Sandefur was the first firefighter on the scene. He said the car was engulfed in flames and no one was around the vehicle. The vehicle was discovered partially on, and partially off the road against a tree. There is NO shoulder to the road at that location, just a ditch and trees.
Northwest Third Street becomes Crowder Road upon entering the western side of Trenton.
