Sports : Brookfield Lady Dogs lose early lead, drop Class 2 championship game

The Brookfield Lady Dogs softball team, on an offensive roll since the opening of the Class 2 state playoffs, again put an early crooked number on the scoreboard to take a seemingly dominant lead in Saturday's state championship game, only to see Pleasant Hope rally from 6-0 down with four runs in the fifth inning, and five more in the sixth, to upend the Cinderella run of Brookfield, 9-6.

Natalie Wheeler was three-for-three for Brookfield, while Alesa Frey added three hits and a run scored in a SIX run top of the third inning. Alexis Lindsay had two hits, and Ashley Kearns two for BHS.

Sarah Siegismund pitched up the win for Pleasant Hope, effectively scattering 14 hits and only being touched up by the six runs in the third. Only two of the runs given up were earned. Samantha Overton went the first 5 1/3 innings for Brookfield and took the loss, giving up 13 hits and nine runs, all earned. Taylor Ewing went the final 2/3 of an inning, striking out two batters and giving up a base hit.

In Friday's Class 2 state semifinals, Brookfield shutout Kelly 7-0 while Pleasant Hope downed Palmyra 7-4. Kelly beat Palmyra for third place, 5-4.

Grain Valley, the team that knocked the Trenton Lady Bulldogs out of the state playoffs a week ago, came up one win short of a Class 3 state title, with Centralia scoring three runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a scoreless tie, with the Lady Panthers claiming the state crown, 3-0.

Grain Valley, in Friday's semifinal, beat Festus by a score of 4-0, while Centralia downed Blair Oaks, 7-1. Blair Oaks beat Festus for third place, 11-6.

Silex won the Class 1 state title with a 7-6 win over Naylor. Naylor had advanced on Friday with a 13-10 victory over the GRC's King City Lady Wildkats, with Silex winning their semifinal over Knox County, 9-2. King City won third place, 5-1 over Knox County.

A dominant softball team from Truman High School (Independence) won the Class 4 state championship, 7-0 over Ozark on Saturday in Springfield. Truman only allowed two runs over its final four games in the state tournament. Truman also won by seven or more runs in its final three games of the state tournament.
