News : Marching bands and contest to highlight 2012 Missouri Day Festival

Window & Entryway Decorating Contest - Businesses and Organizations are encouraged to decorate windows and entryways to portray this year’s theme The Sounds of Freedom: A Tribute to Our Military. Prize money will be awarded in both the business and organization categories. 1st Place: $75, 2nd Place: $50, and 3rd Place: $25. Contest is sponsored by Farmers Bank of Northern Missouri. Yard Decorating Contest - Business and residential entries are being sought. First and second place prizes will be awarded for both categories (business and residential). Please contact Jill Eaton at 660-359-4310 or Cara McClellan at 660-359-3973 to enter. Deadline is 5:00pm October 16th. Sponsored by Citizens Bank & Trust.

Coloring Contest - Students in Pre-K through 6th grade are eligible to enter (public or home schooled). Coloring sheets will be passed out to schools for children in grades Pre-K thru 3. Students in grades 4 thru 6 will be drawing their idea of this year’s theme and what it means to them. Contact Jeanie Griffin at 660-359-3622. Deadline for entries will be October 12th at 4:00. Pumpkin Decorating Contest - Back again this year! Decorate your pumpkin to go along with this year’s theme The Sounds of Freedom: A Tribute to Our Military. Entries may be taken to the Fairgrounds entrance off Oklahoma Avenue Friday, October 19th between 12 noon and 5pm. Winners will be posted at the information booth Saturday, October 20th. The Northwest Missouri Chapter of the Dream Factory will be holding “Chairs for Dreams” on Friday, October 19th at the Elks Lodge in Trenton. The Dream Factory grants dreams to chronically and critically ill children in the area from ages three to 18. A baked spaghetti dinner will be served from 5:30 to 7:30pm with the auction immediately following. Auction will be conducted by Bill & Joe Brinser. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students and children five (5) and under are free. Chairs have been donated and painted by Trenton, Bethany and St. Joseph artists. Several of the chairs may be seen in the windows at 905 Main Street, next to Ron Dougan’s office and some in his windows as well. There will be 24 chairs, nine bar stools, two shelves and three student desks up for bid at the auction. Missouri Day Car Show is Sunday October 21st at Eastside Park. Rain or shine. 13 categories. Fifteen dollars is the fee per entry. Contact Larry McCollom of Trenton. Registration is 9 am to 1130. Door prizes throughout. Call 359-2651 for Larry McCollum.

The marching band festival features numerous high school bands being judged as they compete in parade, field show, drum line and auxiliary unit events during Missouri Days in Trenton. The band events are Saturday October 20th and includes the 8:30 am parade. It will leave from Main and Crowder; follows a route on Main; east on 9th. Bands will exit the parade route at Normal to go to Trenton High School for indoor competitions. The field show at the C-F Russell stadium begins about 12 noon. Buddy Hannaford of Trenton is the manager for the annual marching band festival.
