KTTN/KGOZ Sports : Trenton finishes regular season with 6-2 win at Chillicothe
Posted by Tom on 2012/10/1 20:40:00 (290 reads) News by the same author

The Trenton Lady Bulldogs were able to hold off a series of challenges from Chillicothe to claim a 6-2 win at Danner Park in Chillicothe on Monday night, in the regular season finale for both teams, heard live on KTTN FM 92.3.

Chillicothe opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, with a low line drive by Kelsey Boley skipping to the right-field wall, leaving the Lady Hornet on third base. She was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Daly.

However, the Lady Bulldog offense, held scoreless through two innings, came back strong in the third. Madi Trump led off with a walk, and Scotlin Hurley moved her to second on a single. Both girls moved up one base on a double-steal, and they were driven home on a two-run RBI single by Avery Whitaker. Whitaker would later score the third run of the inning, on a ground ball out off the bat of Cassidy Cotton.

Chillicothe came back to within 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Brooke Thomas, who led off the frame with a single, was driven home on a sacrifice fly by Crysten Lollar. Kelsey Boley was thrown out at third base after the throw to the plate to end the inning.

Trenton scored a run in the fifth inning by putting pressure on the Hornet defense. Kate Lowrey, who finished three for four on the night and was a homer short of the cycle, cracked a single, put saw Makaila Capeder thrown out trying to score. However, a poor throw by the Hornets, attempting to throw out Lowrey, went into the outfield, and Lowrey circled the bases to make the score 4-2.

Trenton added two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning, with Whitaker scoring on a Lowrey triple into right-center field, and Lowrey scoring on an infield single by Cotton.

Scotlin Hurley went the distance for Trenton, giving up two runs, but only one earned, with six strikeouts, including three in a row to set down the Lady Hornets in the seventh.

The win improves Trenton's record to 21-3 heading into the Class 3, District 15 tournament later this week at Excelsior Springs High School. The Lady Bulldogs, a #2 seed in the six-team tournament, will play either Lawson or Richmond at 6 o'clock in the semifinals, with coverage on KTTN FM 92.3 and www.kttn.com. A Trenton win would put the Lady Bulldogs in the District 15 championship game on Saturday morning at 11 o'clock.
