The Trenton Lady Bulldogs used a three-run rally based on “small ball” to scrape out a 4-1 victory on Tuesday night over Lexington, in a softball game broadcast on KTTN FM 92.3 and www.kttn.com.
Lexington opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, with T.A. Mohler and Holly Crabtree cracking back-to-back doubles to center field to take a 1-0 lead. However, Trenton's Scotlin Hurley would dominate from that point, giving up only one hit over the final 6 2/3 innings for the Lady Bulldogs.
Trenton tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the first inning, as a throwing error by the Lexington shortstop on an Avery Whitaker grounder allowed Scotlin Hurley to score from second base.
The game remained tied through the middle innings, until the fifth inning, when Maddie Hooyman beat out a bunt single on a close play at first base, moved to third base on a bunt by Madi Trump that was misplayed by Lexington, and scored, along with Trump, on a two-run single by Scotlin Hurley. Hurley scored on a single by Whitaker to make the score 4-1. Trenton's rally ended quickly, with a double-play grounder followed by a groundout to the pitcher.
Lexington had a second and third, two out rally in the top of the sixth inning, that Hurley squashed with a groundout to third baseman Kate Lowrey.
The win improves Trenton's record to 14-1, while Lexington falls to a mark of 12-5. Trenton is next in action on Thursday night, in a potential district showdown against the Cameron Lady Dragons, at Cameron High School. The Lady Bulldogs will continue their tough stretch of games on Saturday, playing at the Mid-Buchanan Tournament in St. Joseph.
