Sports : Trenton tennis has up-and-down Saturday in Marshall

The Trenton Lady Bulldogs, participating in Saturday's Marshall Tennis Tournament, came home with one win and two losses, defeating Boonville 11-1 in the middle match of the day, but falling to Kirksville 9-3 (first match) and Marshall 12-0 (third match).

Trenton's Maria Stevenson and Megan Derry played what Coach Abby Gott called "their best tennis of the season" in winning their singles matches and doubles match against the Lady Tigers. Stevenson beat Taylor Smith 10-6 while Derry downed Ashley Lyon 10-8. Combining in doubles, Stevenson and Derry beat Helton and Lyon of Kirksville 10-4.

Singles victories for Trenton against Boonville were on injury default for Jaci Tracy, Maria Stevenson 8-1, Megan Derry 8-love, Megan Sole 8-3, and Magie Steinhoff 8-3.

Trenton's doubles wins against the Lady Pirates were Tracy/Tracy 8-2, Stevenson/Derry 8-4, Sole/Steinhoff 8-4, Fender/Villacampa 8-2, Husong/Bailey 8-8 with a 7-3 tiebreak, and Dugan/Brinser 8-love.

Trenton was generally competitive against the host Marshall Owls, but suffered the sweep. Jessica Tracy, Maria Stevenson, and Magie Steinhoff were closed to singles wins, losing their matches 8-5, while the doubles teams of Sole-Steinhoff and Fender-Villacampa managed six points in their matches, falling 8-6. Adding to the competitiveness of the match was the fact that no Trenton athletes were swept in action against the Owls.

The Trenton tennis team hosted Lexington on Monday night at THS, sweeping the Minutewomen by a score of 9-0.

In singles, Jaci Tracy beat Bethanie Ann Florence 8-love, Jessica Tracy defeated Allison Lueck 8-2, Maria Stevenson downed Shaunta Mia Noldan 8-3, Megan Derry swept Brittany Fox 8-love, Megan Sole rolled over Mikaylin Turner 8-1, while Magie Steinhoff swept Cheyanne Albin 8-love.

In doubles, Tracy/Tracy beat Lueck/Noland 8-2, Stevenson/Derry got the win over Florence/Fox 8-2, and Sole/Steinhoff beat Turner/Albin 8-0.

Two JV singles matches were played between the teams, with Trenton getting both. Alexis Fender beat Scogin 6-2, while Alvynne Villacampa took the 6-love win over Scogin.

Trenton girl's tennis has ADDED a match to their schedule. On Monday, September 24th, the Lady Bulldogs host the Carrollton Lady Trojans. This match was originally OMITTED from the THS schedule. The match between THS and CHS begins at 4 o'clock.
