KTTN/KGOZ Sports : Trenton volleyball team finishes runner-up at Lathrop Tournament
Posted by Tom on 2012/9/17 10:50:06 (244 reads) News by the same author

The Trenton Lady Bulldog volleyball team, playing some of the best matches in the history of its program, claimed SECOND place out of ten schools at Saturday's Lathrop Tournament, falling in straight sets to North Platte High School in the championship match, 25-19, 28-26.

In pool play, Trenton started its day in disappointing fashion, falling to the host Lathrop Lady Mules 25-18, 26-24. Trenton's struggles continued it its second match, a 25-23, 25-21 loss to North Platte.

Perhaps boosted by playing North Platte very competitively, the Lady Bulldogs blasted Derrick Thomas Academy in their third match of the day, 25-3, 25-5, before falling to Northland Christian Academy, 25-10, 25-13.

Despite a 1-3 record in pool play, Trenton caught a break by advancing into bracket play, based off of total points from the 1-3 teams, matching up Trenton with #1 seed Orrick.

In come-from-behind fashion, the Lady Bulldogs stunned the Lady Bearcats, 20-25, 25-22, 25-18, advancing into a semifinal match-up with traditionally strong East Buchanan. Trenton, with momentum on its side, beat the girls from Gower in straight sets 25-23, 25-16, setting up the championship match against North Platte, with the Lady Panthers taking the title.

Over the course of the tournament, Trenton's team had sixty aces from serve, with Gwen Delp hitting 18, Courtney Weyer with 15 and Kelsey Scott 14.

Trenton's total of 156 digs were led by Gwen Delp with 69, Kelsey Scott with 35 and Courtney Weyer with 20

Kate Ewald had 101 of Trenton's 115 assists on the day, with Malinda Foster adding 12.

Of Trenton's 129 kills, Lakisha Hughs had 42, Kelsey Scott 36, Katie Ireland with 32 and Rebekah Wiggins with 9. Freshman Tomi Delp had six kills.

Katie Ireland had three blocks, with Rebekah Wiggins adding a pair, and Lakisha Hughs and Kelsey Scott each picked up one block.

Coming off of Saturday's superb performance at Lathrop, the Trenton volleyball team has back-to-back home matches to start the week, hosting Hogan Prep at 6 o'clock tonight (Monday night) and Penney High School of Hamilton at 5 o'clock on Tuesday night.
