KTTN/KGOZ Sports : Trenton softball wins early season showdown with the Penney Hornets
Posted by Tom on 2012/8/27 19:39:25 (263 reads) News by the same author

The Trenton Lady Bulldogs fell behind early, but rallied for a 5-1 softball win on Monday night over Hamilton, in a game from Griffin Memorial Field broadcast LIVE on KTTN FM 92.3 and www.kttn.com.

Hamilton opened the scoring with a manufactured run in the top of the first inning, with Elsie Greenwood singling to start the game, stealing second, moving to third on a bunt, and scoring on a safety squeeze by Kallee Whitt. However, that would be the only damage done by the Lady Hornets offense against Trenton senior right-hander Scotlin Hurley, who held Hamilton to one run on five hits with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Trenton, down 1-0 with two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the third, got a rally started on a bunt single by Maddie Hooyman, followed by a run-scoring hit by Madi Trump. Tom Johnson had the play-by-play call:

Two pitches later, Hurley gave the Lady Bulldogs the lead for good:

Hurley stole second base, giving clean-up hitter Kate Lowrey an opportunity to make it 3-1:

The Lady Bulldogs finished the scoring in the sixth inning, loading the bases and then having the bench contribute RBI's. First it was Megan Lynch driving in Avery Whitaker:

A sacrifice fly by Mallory Hooyman finished the scoring. Trenton coach John Cowling acknowledged the weight lifted off his team's shoulders when they took the lead in the third inning:

Trenton improves to 2-0 with the victory, and in the process paid Hamilton back, admittedly without as much at stake, from Hamilton's stunning 1-0 district championship win from ten months ago in Maysville.
