A Bucklin youth was fatally injured, and two other people were hurt, in the near head-on collision of two vehicles west of Marceline. Seventeen year old Zachary Cupp of Bucklin was pronounced dead early Thursday morning at University Hospital in Columbia, about 4 1/2 hours after the accident. Cupp was the driver of one of the cars involved.

The driver of an SUV, 24 year old Ashley Simpson of Marceline, was taken to Pershing Memorial Hospital in Brookfield with what the Highway Patrol called MODERATE injuries.

A passenger in the SUV, 27 year old Katrice Sartain of Marceline, was taken to Pershing Memorial with minor injuries.

The accident was at a curve about two miles west of Marceline on Route JJ. The location was in Chariton County, just south of the Linn-Chariton County line.

The car driven by Cupp was eastbound and the SUV driven by Miss Simpson was westbound. The Patrol said the SUV crossed the center line and collided nearly head-on with the car. Both vehicles were demolished. All three people were wearing seat belts.

The Patrol said Ashley Simpson was accused of Vehicular Involuntary Manslaughter while Intoxicated, and Failure to Drive on the Right Half of the Road Resulting in an Accident.
