At Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge near Sumner, the JULY FIRST Friday event (on July 6th) has activities that begin at 5:00 PM and continue through the evening. The feature program will be "Mad Science" from Kansas City at 7:00 PM, which will feature explosions, bubbles, and other chemical reactions.

The program explores exothermic chemical reactions and many other hands on scientific experiments. Mad Science is an educational program that intertwines education and entertainment. As a new feature at this FIRST FRIDAY, once darkness falls, the refuge will be screening the Disney-Pixar movie "A Bug's Life" in the amphitheater, along with popcorn and s'mores.

July 6th events for the family include hayrides, tower tours, and free hot dogs supplied by Agri-Services of Brunswick, as well as an archery range and the interactive Stream Box. There will also be a turtle tank where visitors can touch and learn about turtles found on the refuge and an insect scavenger hunt for children. The Currey Korn Family bluegrass band will be returning to play traditional bluegrass music.
