KTTN/KGOZ Weather : National Weather Service to update text alert warnings

A new type of text alert could be coming to your cellphone beginning this month. Mike Lear's report includes an interview with a meteorologist from the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill:

The National Weather Service along with the Department of Homeland Security will begin to issue brief messages alerting those in harms way to the threats of tornadoes, blizzards, and ice storms. The message will come in text form to those with phones having the proper technology. Smartphone owners have a good chance of being able to receive such warnings now:

Bailey says these texts are only meant to get a person's attention. The text messages are restricted to 90 characters, and they are not intended to give a person all of the information they would need in an emergency. Bailey feels the new messaging service will be importqnt for emergency managers in each county:
