KTTN Sports has learned that Trenton High School will host the Class 2, District 16 softball tournament at the refurbished Ebbe Sports Complex in early October.
Trenton, a strong softball program in recent years, was in Class 3 for a brief two-year stretch, advancing to the state quarterfinals in 2012 before falling to Grain Valley, and falling in last year's district final in extra innings to the Cameron Lady Dragons. Brookfield has been a strong Class 2 program in recent years, advancing to the state playoffs in both 2012 and 2013, including a runner-up finish in 2012. Both Brookfield and Trenton are in this year's Class 2, District 16 tournament, making up 1/3 of the field.
Other schools in the tournament will be South Harrison High School (Bethany), Marceline High School, Milan High School, and Putnam County High School. The tournament brackets will be determined at a coaches seeding meeting late in the season, where overall record, strength of schedule, and head-to-head matchups will be used as criteria to seed the field. The top two teams will get first-round byes. The tournament is expected to be played sometime between Wednesday, October 8th and Saturday, October 11th. Both Trenton and Brookfield are off to strong starts this season, going 2-0 against tough competition. Milan is 0-2, but has shown overall improvement in first week losses to Trenton and Gallatin, while Putnam County is 2-1 after splitting a pair of home games, and winning at Marceline on Thursday night by an 8-3 final score. South Harrison has struggled out of the gate, going 0-2 against MEC competition in Maryville and Cameron.
In head-to-head competition against district foes, Trenton has a 10-0 victory over Milan on Monday night, will host Marceline on September 29th, will travel to Brookfield on September 9th, will be at Putnam County on September 22nd, and travel to South Harrison on October 2nd.
