UPDATE: 8:26 a.m.

People near Pattonsburg, Mo. are urged to use caution and observe your surroundings this morning - a mentally ill man with a gun is on the run in the area after stealing a police car.

Police say that man, Joshua W. Boyd, is described as approximately 5'9" tall, weighing around 170 lbs. He was last seen wearing a blue shirt and khaki shorts. He is approximately 30 years old.

Kansas City authorities described an "emotionally disturbed homeless man" who stole a blue Ford Taurus around 2:30 this morning, seen traveling on eastbound Interstate 70, near Prospect. Police attempted to make contact with the man over a 2-way radio, with no success.

Around 4:20 a.m., the Missouri Highway Patrol located the vehicle on the side of Interstate 35 near Pattonsburg (10 miles south of Bethany), with a shotgun noted to be missing from the vehicle.

As a result of the ongoing search, police are asking nearby residents, particularly those in Daviess County, to be on alert. They are asking people to lock their doors and make sure their vehicles are secure. Neighboring counties to Daviess, including Harrison, Grundy, Mercer, and Caldwell Counties, are also being advised of the situation.

Authorities are reminding the public that if you must leave your house this morning, be aware of your surroundings.

Anyone with information is asked to call the TIPS Hotline, 816-474-TIPS.
