Police said they received a call around 11 p.m. about a wild animal attack at a home on Brinsmade Road.

The woman, who was identified as Betty McKernan, opened her sliding glass door to let in her cat when a raccoon followed the feline inside.

"I don't recommend any friendly connections with wild animals like raccoons," McKernan said. "They simply don't know good manners."

Police said McKernan attempted to pet what she thought was the cat and that's when the raccoon attacked her.

It bit her elbow, hand, forearm, lip and chin. McKernan was immediately taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital and received 30 stitches.

"When something hurts all over, it sort of all neutralizes out to a lump of ouch," McKernan said.

When police arrived, the animal charged at two officers. It was euthanized before it could inflict further damage.

McKernan was released from Yale-New Haven Hospital and is taking a number of medications, just in case the raccoon had any diseases.

"This too shall pass. When it all gets taken care of and healed," McKernan said. "It's just a matter of time."

The Hamden Animal Control Division transported the raccoon to the Connecticut Public Health Laboratory for rabies testing.
