Sports : Trenton Softball Opens 2014 Season, Aiming For District Title

The most successful Trenton girl's sports program of the past decade is aiming for a return to district championship status this fall, while still awaiting word on whether the Lady Bulldogs will stay in Class 3, or move down to Class 2, for the 2014 campaign.

Practice began on Monday morning at Mark Griffin Memorial Field, with 24 young ladies coming out for the team this year. Head coach John Cowling admitted that goals remain high for the Lady Bulldogs:

Trenton blew a late-game lead in the district championship game against Cameron a season ago, before falling in extra innings to the Lady Dragons.

With the graduation losses of players like Makaila Capeder, Cassidy Cotton, Tosha Wilson, and Madi Trump, it may be a large group of sophomores that make the biggest impact on the field over the next two months:

Otto, a junior first baseman for Trenton, suffered an ACL tear early in last year's basketball season, and was cleared to return to sporting activities just as the summer began.

While Trenton's pitching has not been quite as dominant as during the era record-setting hurler Aubrey Utley, the offense has become more potent in recent years, a trend that Cowling hopes to continue:

Trenton will host a softball jamboree event on Saturday, August 16th. The season opener is at Milan on Monday, August 25th, with a game at Gallatin on Tuesday, August 26th. The home opener for the Lady Bulldogs will be Thursday, August 28th, with the Carrollton Lady Trojans paying a visit to refurbished Griffin Field.
