(stltoday.com) - Two people were shot, one of them fatally, as a University City High School alumni picnic was winding down Saturday night, police say.
A 20-year-old man was killed in the incident at 7:15 p.m. at Heman Park. A 39-year-old man was shot in the leg and is in stable condition, according to University City police Capt. Michael Ransom.
Both men were transported to Barnes Jewish Hospital, where the 20-year-old was pronounced dead.
Police have not yet identified the victims or described what led to the shootings. Police said there was a "disturbance" at the park before several shots were fired, but are not saying whether the shootings were related to that.
The shootings occurred during the annual UCity alumni picnic. The picnic was set to end at 6 p.m., but several hundred people remained at the park afterward.
"Lots of people were still at the park," Ransom said. "It's very early on in the investigation," he said. "We never had problems with the event in years past."
University City Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to call the police department at (314) 725-2211 or CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS.
