A spokeswoman for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service said someone came into the post office and shot Michelle Bell, the acting postmaster for the Hale post office, a couple of times. Bell was the only one in the post office at the time of the shooting.

Bell was taken to a hospital and was initially listed in critical condition, but has since been upgraded to stable condition.

Investigators said the suspected shooter had self-inflicted gunshot wounds, but was alive when emergency crews arrived. He was taken to a hospital.

The suspect's name has not been released, but investigators said he and Bell knew each other.

The U.S. Postal Service said all mail in the building will be taken to nearby Bosworth, Missouri, while the investigation goes on. People will be able to pick up their mail in Bosworth on Thursday.
