Southeast Missouri State University sports information director Jeff Honza Friday night issued an apology for a tweet that went out Friday afternoon that was supposed to link to track and field results, but instead led viewers to a risqué photo of two women in a bathroom.

Honza said the university is investigating the tweet.

The tweet wound up on the website Deadspin, which bills itself as sports news and commentary with a humorous slant.

The tweet was issued from @GoSoutheast, the official Twitter profile of Southeast Missouri State Redhawks athletics. University officials said Friday night that they were aware of the issue.

Southeast director of athletics Mark Alnutt issued a formal statement late Friday night. In it, he said "the university is apologetic over the incident and is in the process of conducting an investigation of how it occurred."

The photo shows two young women in a bathroom, one in her underwear and a tank top and the other in a denim vest with a white blouse underneath and a pair of black shorts down around her knees. The women's faces were blurred out.

A text message, email and phone call to Honza to find out whether the young women were Southeast students and whether the tweet has been taken down were not immediately returned Friday night.

"We're sorry that that went out on the university Twitter account. We're looking into it," Honza said. He said he did not know where it originated from.

People who follow @GoSoutheast would have received the tweet. "Anybody can retweet anything," Honza said. "There's so much sharing on social media."
