The program is designed to help parents and caregivers prepare children for kindergarten.

The Livingston County Library says, from the time children are infants, they learn language and other skills which help them learn to read. The program, for children birth to kindergarten, is intended to help children gain those skills.

The sign-up for the program begins May 12th at the Children's Department of the Livingston County Library at Chillicothe. The program includes a log, a bag to
personalize and keep, and prizes after various numbers of books are reached. When 1,000 books are shared, the child will be invited to a “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” graduation party.

The kickoff coincides with Children's Book Week May 12th through 18th.

Children's Librarian, Candice Warren, said participants decide the pace of the program, and what works best for their family. Ms. Warren said “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” goes hand-in-hand with the library's Books for Babies hospital program and its Fizz, Boom, Read summer reading program.
