Sports : Maryville Wins Benton Tennis Invitational, Trenton Sixth

Maryville beat Bishop LeBlond 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon to win the Benton Tennis Tournament at the Noyes Complex in St. Joseph. Trenton fell to Lafayette in the fifth place match, 3-2.

Trenton opened play with a 3-2 quarterfinal loss to the rival Chillicothe Hornets. In singles play, Poling (CHS) beat Marlay (THS) 10-love and Sims (CHS) beat Fletchall (THS) 10-5.

In doubles play against the Hornets, the Bulldogs duo of Swann and Davis beat McKiddy and Peterson 10-4, while Utley and Houghton downed Barron and Bonderer 10-6. An 11-9 thriller at #3 doubles, with Chillicothe's Anthony and Evans beating Trenton's Albrecht and Lynch, moved the Hornets on.

Trenton, in consolation semifinal play, rolled past the Cameron Dragons, 4-1. Cameron's only win came in a 10-5 victory over McDaniel over Marlay in singles play. In the other singles match, Fletchall earned a win for the Bulldogs, 10-2 over Meister.

Trenton swept the doubles matches against the Dragons, with Swann and Davis downing Riley and Hahn 10-8, Utley and Houghton rolling to a 10-4 decision over Hershberger and Byron, and Albrecht and Lynch defeating Mazur and Findley 10-2.

After falling in the semifinals, Chillicothe was beaten by Savannah for third place, 4-1. Cameron beat Benton for seventh place.

In the fifth place match, the Lafayette Irish and Trenton Bulldogs split singles matches, with Cook sweeping Marlay (Lafayette win) 10-love, while Fletchall beat Wolf (Trenton win) 10-5.

In singles competition, Brand/Hadley of the Irish beat Swann/Davis 11-10, Trenton's Utley/Houghton beat Ellis/Henderson 10-4, while Lafayette's Cline/Trantloff defeated Albrecht/Lynch 10-8.
