News : Missouri FFA Convention Wraps Up; Area Participants Do Well

State and Area Stars were named at the the Missouri FFA Convention concluding late last week.

Missouri FFA Association recognized Abby McLain of the Princeton FFA Chapter as Area 2 Star in Agribusiness. Her parents are Denny McLain and Sharon Schneider.

Her supervised ag experience includes caring for her family’s herd of 25 dairy goats. From the
organic milk, she makes soaps and lotions which she markets and sells.

Missouri FFA Association recognized Ashley Starrett of Putnam County FFA Chapter as Area 3 Star in Agribusiness. Her parents are Dana and Tracy Starrett of Unionville, Starrett’s SAE began when she started mowing yards at Lake Thunderhead in 2010. Starrett now mows and landscapes 20 yards. During winter months, Starett offers snow removal for residents in the Lake Thunderhead area.

The State Star in agri business is Richard Young of Ellsberry.

The Missouri FFA Association recognized Case White of the Newtown-Harris FFA Chapter as Area 3 Star in Placement. His parents are Shawn White and Lynn Shelton.

White's SAE program includes employment at Larry Letner’s Rx Ranch. At the ranch, White is responsible for operating farm machinery, pasture improvement and equipment maintenance. White also helps maintain a swine herd for Murphy-Brown.

The Missouri FFA Association recognized Ben Burtch of the Chillicothe FFA Chapter as the Area 2 Star in Placement. His parents are Tony Burtch and Amy Anderson of Chillicothe.

Burtch's SAE program comprises his employment with Trans Ova Genetics, where he operated machinery, maintained facilities, and fed, vaccinated and cared for cattle. Burtch also worked for a ewe-lamb operation, where he fed, vaccinated and assisted in the lambing process. He also helped construct feeders and various fencing systems. 

The State Star in Placement is Jack Lang of Boonville.

Missouri FFA Association recognized Brandon Bothwell of the Chillicothe FFA Chapter as the Area 2 Star Farmer. His parents are Barrie and Julie Bothwell of Mooresville.

Bothwell’s SAE includes beef, soybean and wheat production. His beef cattle herd started with five cows and grew to include more than 50 head of cattle. Bothwell rents pasture from his neighbor to feed his cattle.

The State Star Farmer is Mason Sandidge of Marshall.

The Missouri FFA Association recognized Nathan Miller of the Milan FFA Chapter as the Area 3 Star in Agriscience. His parents are Jason and Fern Dickerson of Milan.

This is the first year the state association recognized Agriscience for a star designation.

Miller’s SAE program started with the purchase of eight blueberry plants and an interest in how pH levels affected berry production and plant health. He has conducted two research studies involving his blueberry crop. The first study examined Miller’s theory that increased acidity levels would allow plants to reach higher production levels. The second study involved taking divisional cuttings from blueberry plants and planting them in various growing mediums to test the adaptability and drought resistance of the plants.

The State Star in Agri Science is Alexis Ash of Tuscumbia.

Among career development results at Missouri's FFA Convention in Columbia:

Princeton FFA took 1st place in livestock judging. Others from this area included Green City 3rd and Chillicothe 7th. Princeton team members Thomas Mallinson and Justin Hamilton were the numbers one and two individual judges at state. Others on the national-qualifying livestock judging team from Princeton are Tessa Schwartzkopf (10th)and Abby McLain (41st)

Meadville took 6th in soils judging; Gilman City was 13th.

Putnam County was 10th and Green City 11th in dairy foods; Jacey Valentine of
Putnam County was the 7th high individual judge.

Green City had a team finish 11th in poultry; Milan was 12th in FFA knowledge; Princeton was 6th in knowledge; 12th in judging of horses; 17th in poultry;

Six area FFA members are winners of 1st place proficiency awards at the state convention. They include Thomas Mallinson of Princeton in beef production, entreprenuership; Hadley Williams of Green City in beef production placement; Natalie Ayers of Green City in specialty crop production; Brandon Bothwell of the Chillicothe chapter in grain production entreprenuership; Drew Curley of Brookfield in ag sales placement; and Amy Speichinger of Brookfield in vegetable production.


Second place winners of state proficiency awards from area chapters include five other FFA members. Mason Larson of Grundy R-5 at Galt in Agricultural Mechanics Repair and Maintenance – Entrepreneurship; J-D Berten of Gallatin in agricultural services; John Kern of South Harrison in diversified crop productionplacement; Ethan Fordyce, also of South Harrison, in grain production placement;and Allyson Parks of Brookfield in outdoor recreation.

National chapter awards for the top FFA in the state included Chillicothe 6th and Milan 10th. Marshall received the honor as the first place FFA chapter in Missouri.

Northern Missouri representatives on the 16 member state officer team are Brock Larsen of Newtown Harris for Area Three; Brandon Bothwell of Mooresville, with Chillicothe FFA, for Area Two; and Morgan Walkup of Gower and East Buchanan FFA for Area One. The new Missouri FFA president is Cole Edwards of Salisbury.

In results following yesterday's career development judging events at the Missouri FFA Convention in Columbia, Trenton high school had an FFA team take second place at state in agriculture sales. Trenton trailed first place Troy by 38points in that category. Trenton high school senior Malinda Foster won 1st place among all the individuals in ag sales. Other team members from Trenton were Brielly Roy(15th), Haley Mathews (21st) and Alex Davis (25th).

Other Trenton teams placing high (with group one ratings) were dairy cattle in 7th place and the meats judging team was 10th. Other state qualifying teams from Trenton competed Thursday and included farm management (37th) and knowledge (47th).

Additional results involving Princeton FFA included a team taking 7th place in meats and 14th in dairy cattle. On Thursday: Princeton took 1st place at state in the livestock judging, 6th in knowledge; 12th in horses; and 17th in poultry.

Other results from yesterday involving area schools include Hamilton 7th in forestry and Gallatin was 9th in dairy cattle judging. Top ten individual results involving area FFA members involved in the dairy cattle judging included Joel Martin of Meadville in 6th place and Houston Sprinkle of Trenton was 8th..
