Sports : Mizzou Begins Search For New Basketball Coach

The University of Missouri made it official at an 11 o'clock press conference on Friday morning in Columbia. Frank Haith is no longer the basketball coach at the university, after accepting the open coaching position at the University of Tulsa.

Haith, after interviewing with Tulsa officials on Thursday evening, informed his former boss by text message of his decision. Here is Mike Alden:

Alden thanked Haith for his three years at the University of Missouri, and went into details on the search for a new coach, now underway in Columbia:

Frank Haith is expected to be introduced as the new head coach of the Tulsa Golden Hurricane at a 1 o'clock press conference in Oklahoma. He will replace Danny Manning, who left Tulsa earlier this month for the head coaching job at Wake Forest.

ESPN has spoken with Coach Haith, and is reporting that Haith has been given a seven-year contract at Tulsa that will pay an average of $1.85-million a year.

Haith also told ESPN he would take his Missouri staff with him, though one assistant was said to be pursuing another job and so might not go to Tulsa.

Haith tells ESPN he was attracted in part by the fact that the national champion (Connecticut) came out of the American Athletic Conference, where Tulsa is moving next season.

“This has been a great basketball job at Tulsa with a great tradition with Tubby Smith, Nolan Richardson and most recently with Danny Manning,” Haith told ESPN. “There is great leadership here at Tulsa and they are showing a great commitment.”

Early media reports have speculated on numerous names in Missouri's coaching search, including Wichita State's Gregg Marshall, former UCLA coach Ben Howland, Nebraska coach Tim Miles, Dayton coach Archie Miller, and Xavier coach Chris Mack. A favorite for many across the state is Kim Anderson, a former Tiger assistant under Norm Stewart who just won a NCAA Division Two national championship with the University of Central Missouri.
