When police responded to a 911 call at an apartment complex in the 600 block of South 71st Terrace in KCK about 1 a.m. Sunday they discovered a toddler who died tragically.

"I just couldn't imagine that happening to one of my kids. It's sad," said Colleen Hanson, a neighbor.

Hanson lives a floor above the room where her cousin discovered a 20-month-old boy in the hallway of their apartment building.

"When they picked him up and carried him out I just started crying, like 'Oh, my God,'" she said.

Police say the toddler was rushed to the hospital where he died. They haven't made any arrests, but the department's major case unit is investigating the cause of death.

"After speaking with everybody it will depend on if they file charges or if there are any charges to be made. We don't know anything until that autopsy report comes back," said Amber Hickerson with the Kansas City, KS, Police Department.

Hanson said the boy's mother wasn't home at the time and that her boyfriend had been watching the toddler and another child. She said neither had been back to the apartment since Sunday.

"All we can do is wait for the detectives to find out what really happened," she said.
