News : Trenton Boy Scout Leader Recognized With Award

A long time Trenton Boy Scout leader, Dave Bengtson, has been honored by the Pony Express Council as a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award.

The award is the highest form of recognition that a council can bestow on a volunteer. It is made for noteworthy service of exceptional character to boyhood by registered Scouters within the jurisdiction of the Pony Express Council.

The Silver Beaver recipients were recognized at the Annual Council Recognition Dinner held April 5th at the Grace Evangelical Church in St Joseph, Mo.

The Pony Express Council has participated in this recognition program since its inception, presenting 46 Silver Beaver Awards in between 1931 and 1949. In 2013, the council recognized four additional leaders who will bring the total recipients to 328.

Although presentation is made by the Council, all nominations submitted must be approved by the National Court of Honor before the award can be presented. Only those persons who have been nominated by their Scouting peers are considered by the local council and the award may not be personally applied for.

Bengtson joins 21 other recipients from the Trenton area dating back nearly 70 years. They include; Dr. L.D. Menefee, J.M. Cahill, Kenneth Thomas, Russell Joiner, Ernest Rousselot, John Baugher Jr., Paul Jackson, Les Giles, Ron Dougan, Bill Vaughn, Dick Boehner, Don Warren, Gene Kirk, K.D. Whitt, Gary Black, Dean Sager, Kevin Bailey, Cory Cooksey, Bob Moore, Dr. Paul Cox and Chris Hoffman.

Kevin Bailey of Trenton made the presentation with Chris Hoffman serving as escort. Both are former Silver Beaver Award recipients. Family members and friends from Trenton, and the Ma-Has-Kah District, joined Scouters from throughout the council for the event. Other recipients recognized for the award were Mabel Blanchard of Kidder, Paul Becker of Atchison Ks. and Rev. Dr. Darrell Jones of St. Joseph.
