(KansasCity.com) - Kansas City police are investigating what led to the death of a man in his 50s found inside his car trunk in a downtown parking garage.

The man’s 12-year-old son found the body shortly before 3 p.m. Friday in the 600 block of Central Street. The son was looking for car keys when he found the body.

The victim had not been seen for several days, said Sgt. Marisa Barnes, the police department’s spokeswoman.

The garage is between the Atriums East Lofts and the Atriums at Soho West Lofts, which are described as luxury downtown loft homes in an 1800s building. The parking garage is used by residents of the Atriums lofts and condominiums. The victim lived alone in a loft, police said.

Parking spaces are assigned, and the garage entrance is secured with a roll-up, metal-slat door. Residents use a remote control to gain access, resident Brandon Glass said. Officers closed access to the garage Friday and wrapped yellow crime scene tape around the silver sedan in which the body was found.

The cause and manner of death remained unknown Friday night. Detectives were interviewing relatives.

Some nearby residents, including Josh Evans, gathered outside. He could not get to his car parked inside the garage.

“It’s always locked, so this is very surprising,” he said. “I can’t believe someone could get in there unless they were a resident.”
