The Trenton Bulldog boys tennis team salvaged a fifth place singles finish for Isaiah Swann and a sixth place doubles performance from Wilson Utley and Chanse Houghton at Friday's Cameron Tournament.
Swann, who had a first-round bye, went 3-1 on the day, rallying from a second-round defeat (8-4) to Matt Gibson to win three matches in a row to finish his day. In a second-round consolation match, Swann downed Nate Meister of Cameron 6-love. In his next match, Swann doubled up LeBlond's Drake Ford 6-3, before winning the consolation final over LeBlond's Nolan Nadolski 6-4.
Trenton's singles player Alex Davis had a up-and-down day, finishing 2-2, with wins in the first round over Craig Helm of Savannah (6-3), and after an 8-2 quarterfinal loss to Kyle Taylor of Higginsville, a 6-love win over Cole Mazer of Cameron. Nadolski ended Davis' day with a 6-3 win in a consolation semifinal.
In doubles, the team of Utley and Houghton suffered a first-round defeat to Sandy and Ferguson of Savannah (6-3), but rebounded with back-to-back wins in consolation play, by scores of 6-3 over Byrom and Hershberger of Cameron and 6-1 over Sandy and Ferguson of Savannah. Utley and Houghton were shut out, 6-love, against LeBlond's team of Mears and Lierz in the consolation final, earning the Trenton duo sixth place.
Trenton's #2 doubles entry of Marlay and Fletchall had their day end with an 0-2 mark, with a pair of 6-4 defeats. In the first round, Lamphier and Dyer of Higginsville beat the Trenton tandem. In a first-round consolation battle, Mears and Lierz of LeBlond beat Marlay and Fletchall.
The meet was played in less than ideal weather conditions, with cold, overcast, and especially windy conditions making play difficult on the Cameron courts. The Trenton tennis team next plays on Monday, traveling to St. Joseph to take on the Benton Cardinals at 4 o'clock.
