Capt. Michael Ransom said Joseph Price, 48, turned himself in at University City police headquarters Thursday morning. Ransom said police found Price's empty 1984 pickup truck in a parking lot in St. Ann on Wednesday night.

Police say they believe Price fatally shot a woman about 8:35 a.m. Wednesday and seriously wounded her sister in a home in the 8200 block of Paramount Drive.

The woman who died has been identified as Sheila C. Price, 49. Police have not identified her sister, 41, who is in critical condition at a hospital.

Joseph Price is not yet charged with a crime but police would seek charges against him on Thursday.

Ransom has given no motive for the crime. He said two other adult females and three children were in the home at the time of the shootings. None of them was injured.

John Alexander, 74, who lives next door to the shooting scene, said the victims were sisters. Alexander said he saw Joseph Price sitting in the blue pickup in front of the home early Wednesday when Alexander walked outside for his newspaper. Alexander said he sold Price the truck about a year ago.

He said Joseph Price does not live next door and is a boyfriend of one of the women. Alexander said Price, who works as a grocery store cook, told him he was off work Wednesday and was looking for odd jobs. Alexander said he had no work for him, and Price got back in his truck.

“He was acting normal,” Alexander said. “This guy Price is normally a nice guy. I was wondering why he was here so early.”

Alexander said he did not hear gunfire. He said he was told a grandson of one of the victims fled the home and got help from a school bus driver parked by a nearby elementary school.

Alexander said he lent one of the women his car about two weeks ago because she needed to attend a job fair. He said she told him last weekend that she got the job.

Alexander said he was shocked by what happened. “They’re nice people,” he said.
