News : USDA Discusses Funding Of Community Projects In Local Communities

Representatives of the Rural Development Division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture visited Trenton, Milan, and Browning yesterday to discuss funding for community projects.

The Rural Development officials were accompanied by representatives of offices of Congressman Sam Graves, Senator Roy Blunt, and Senator Claire McCaskill.

Trenton was allocated 2 Rural Business Enterprise grants totaling $55,250 for the 2012 and 2013 fiscal years. They're to be used to help finance the construction of a farmers market pavilion in downtown Trenton. Other activities also are envisioned for the proposed pavilion.

The Sullivan County 911 Association is the recipient of a Community Facility loan of $75,000, and a Community Facility Grant of $15,000 from USDA Rural Development. Interest on the loan is nearly 3.4% .


The funds are to be used to purchase a new 911 telephone system to replace equipment described as obsolete. Rural Development said replacement parts no longer are being manufactured for the current system, and it lacks an adequate caller location feature for wireless telephones, which impedes quick response. Rural Development says the new 911 system is planned for installation late this year.

The City of Browning is the recipient of an Economic Impact Initiative Grant of nearly $13,000 to purchase an emergency warning siren. The grant is to provide 75% of the costs. Rural Development says the funds will be used to replace an obsolete siren that does not function. Rural Development says repairing the current warning siren was determined to be cost prohibitive. Browning City officials were in the process of seeking bids in hopes of having the warning siren installed before the spring storm season.
