Police officers arrived shortly after 5:30 p.m. to a home at 1510 S. 41st St., where they encountered what authorities described as an intoxicated man with a handgun who was threatening suicide.

A police officer fired shots and the man was taken to Heartland Regional Medical Center, where he died.

Police Chief Chris Connally released a brief statement confirming that one man died in an officer-involved shooting. Authorities released no other details of any confrontation that led up to the shooting.

The identity of both the shooting victim and the officer was not released Monday night. The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of a joint investigation between the department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Neighbors in the area said it appeared the shooting incident occurred outside of the home, but police did not confirm that.

Maria Maier, who lives a few houses down from the man, said she witnessed the shooting as it occurred outside of the home.

She was alerted to it by her daughter, who warned her to stay inside. She saw the man outside the home with two women, one of whom she recognized as the man’s girlfriend.

Ms. Maier said the scene wasn’t chaotic. She saw the man and the woman in front of the house, talking. Periodically they would separate, the woman going toward the street and the man walking up the driveway to the garage door.

“(They were) not yelling, not screaming, but they were talking to each other,” she said.

She said at one point, he came into the front yard and police came out from behind the house and down the street and shot at him. She said she thought she’d heard six shots.

Ms. Maier said she couldn’t tell if the man had a gun out.

“He had his hand up by his forehead, but it could have been a cell phone,” she said.

Ms. Maier said it’s the first time this sort of thing has happened in her neighborhood in the 45 years she’s lived there.

She said the man had lived in the neighborhood for about three years.

“He was a quiet neighbor since he’s been here,” she said.
