Sports : Mercer Lady Cardinals Win Fifth Straight District Title

The Mercer Lady Cardinal basketball team will travel to St. Joseph on Tuesday night, taking on the unbeaten Nodaway-Holt Lady Trojans in a Class 1 sectional to be heard on KTTN FM 92.3 and www.kttn.com.

Mercer won its fifth consecutive district title on Friday night, downing Jefferson by a final score of 47-31. The fourth-ranked Lady Cardinals beat the rival Lady Eagles for the second straight year in a district final, with Nicole Kost scoring 17 points, Lindsay Wyatt 12, and Bailey Owens 11.

The win improves Mercer's record to 26-1, while Jefferson ends the season at 16-12.

Nodaway-Holt, Mercer's Tuesday night opponent, is a perfect 29-0 and ranked #1 in the Class 1 girl's basketball poll. The Lady Trojans won the District 15 final on Friday night, 73-59 over South Holt. Dennis Stephenson will have the call of Tuesday night's battle on KTTN FM 92.3, with pregame from the St. Joseph Civic Arena set for 5:45.

Mercer will be taking a pep bus to Tuesday night's sectional playoff game. They must have 15 riders with each person paying $5.00. Entry to the game will be $6.00 per person. The bus will leave the North Mercer School at 3:15 PM. Riders are asked to meet in the school commons prior to departure. In order to ride the bus, students must be in the 7th grade or accompanied by a parent. Deadine to sign up will be 1:00 PM. Call the school at (660) 382-4214 to sign up!
