Sports : District 16 Champions End Trenton's Seasons At Lathrop

Both Trenton High School basketball teams saw their seasons come to an end, losing to the eventual Class 3, District 16 champions in semifinal round games from the Lathrop High School gymnasium.

On Wednesday night, the defense and physicality of the Cameron Lady Dragons wore down Trenton, as a third-quarter surge helped push Cameron to a 50-39 win, ending the Lady Bulldogs season at 19-8. Trenton, a #4 seed looking for an upset, was in solid position after the first half, down by a score of 15-13, but Cameron's junior point guard Melia Richardson took control of the game in the third quarter, gashing Trenton's defense on the dribble in a 13-5 run that effectively ended the upset hopes of the Bulldogs.

Richardson ended with 18 points and Ashli Lykins 17 for Cameron, who went on to defeat Lathrop 44-30 in Saturday's district final, sending the Lady Dragons into the Class 3 sectionals for the season straight year. Cameron finished second in state in 2012-2013. McKinley Hurley led Trenton with 12 points, Maikaila Capeder and Madi Trump both scored 10.

On Thursday night, Trenton came in as the higher seed (2 compared to 3) against Bishop LeBlond, but the Golden Eagles physical play and shooting prowess did in the Bulldogs, with the Golden Eagles rolling to a 62-43 win. The game was tight through the first quarter, with LeBlond leading 12-10 after eight minutes, but the MEC squad dominated the middle two quarters, putting the Bulldogs down 16 heading into the final eight minutes, a deficit Trenton was unable to crack. Chase Tolson finished his Bulldog career with a 15 points, four assist, two steal effort. The Bulldog program continues to surge in a positive direction, after advancing to the district semifinals, and finishing with a 15-11 season, the best mark for a Trenton team since the Bulldogs reached the district championship game in 2000-2001.

Bishop LeBlond went on to win the Class 3, District 16 title, upsetting top-seeded Lawson in Saturday afternoon's championship game, 63-54. Quentin Obermier, after a double-figure outing against Trenton, led the Eagles on Saturday with 18 points, while Connor Haynes added 17. Lawson, in finishing the season at 21-7, had 22 points had Spencer Wood and 10 points from Garrett Titus.
