Sports : NCMC Pirates Slay The Dragons In Region Sweep

The North Central Missouri College basketball teams, on Wednesday night, picked up their first Region 16 sweep of the season, sending the visiting Wentworth Red Dragons home with two losses.

The Lady Pirates continue to play superb basketball, torching the Red Dragons in an 87-54 rout. The win improves North Central to 11-12 on the season, but 5-1 in Region 16 competition (tied for first place with St. Louis). The Lady Pirates will host St. Louis on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with the potential #1 seed for the postseason tournament up for grabs. Kayla Oetterer led NCMC in the Wentworth win with 29 points, while Sydnee Rounkles had 14 points, and Brooke Parton 11. Wentworth Military Academy, now 9-9 on the season, had Shekorya Brower with 18 points and Kayla Thompson with 10.

The Pirate men held off an early second half comeback by the Red Dragons, and went on to a 78-66 win, giving North Central its first Region XVI win (1-3) of the season, and pushing the Pirates to third place in the four-team region race. Higginsville native Tyrell Thirkield had a spectacular night for the Pirates, with 26 points. Xavier Newson added 18, and Tyler Peterson 17 points. NCMC has won four games in a row, to improve to 14-10 on the season, and will host St. Louis on Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock. WMA was led in Wednesday night's defeat by Bryant Gaines with 21 points, Dillon Smith with 13, and Durin Miller with 11. NCMC and Wentworth will rematch on the Dragons home floor in Lexington next Saturday, February 22nd, at 2 o'clock and 4 o'clock.

Both Wednesday night's games and Saturday afternoon's games, from the Ketcham Community Center in Trenton, were/will be heard on Hot Country Z 101.7 and www.kgozfm.com.
