At least two people were injured late Saturday night in a shooting at the Arena Building in Cape Girardeau, police reported.
About 10:20 p.m. Saturday, officers at the Arena Building, 410 Kiwanis Drive, heard shots fired inside the building, a Cape Girardeau police spokesman reported in a news release early Sunday morning.

Several people fled the building, and an officer at the scene Saturday night said a man was taken to the hospital with what he believed were non-life-threatening injuries.

The victim had a gunshot wound to his chest, according to Darin Hickey, public information officer for the Cape Girardeau Police Department.

Cpl. Rodney Edwards of the Cape Girardeau Police Department said the event at the arena shut down early as a result of the shooting. A stream of attendees could be seen leaving the area shortly after 10:30 p.m.

About 10:45 p.m., another shot rang out north of the building. Several officers ran toward the sound but did not find the shooter or any victims.

In the news release early Sunday, Hickey wrote that officers were sent to a hospital about 11:10 p.m. after someone walked into the emergency room with a gunshot wound to his leg and said he had been shot while he was at the Arena Building.

Less than an hour later, scanner traffic indicated three more shots had been fired in the area.

Officers patrolling about midnight heard what they believed to be gunshots coming from downtown Cape Girardeau but did not find any victims at the time, Hickey reported.

A woman came into the Cape Girardeau Police Department about 1:15 a.m., saying her vehicle -- which was unoccupied at the time -- had been shot several times, but no one was hurt, Hickey reported.

Police are investigating where the damage to the woman's car occurred, Hickey reported.

As of Sunday evening, police had no new information to report, Hickey said in an email.

An arena security guard who declined to give his name said a man was attending the Rich Homie Quan concert at the arena when he "got physical with security" and was escorted out of the building.

The man came back with a gun and tried to retaliate, the guard said.

"[He] did not like it one bit, but he had numerous chances," the guard said. " ... He had to go."

The security guard said he did not know the shooter's identity or where he was from.

"It's a crazy night," he said.

Edwards said the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted the Cape Girardeau Police Department at the arena.
