Sports : Penney Girls Advance To Lawson Tournament Semifinals

The fifth-seeded Lady Hornets from Penney High School won a low-scoring contest with Richmond on Tuesday night, moving into the Lawson Tournament semifinals.

The final score, in favor of Hamilton, was 35-30. Morgan Prather provided the majority of the offensive punch for Hamilton, scoring 23 points. No Richmond players were in double figures. In the other girl's quarterfinal played on Tuesday night, the host Lawson Lady Cardinals hammered Carrollton, 61-28. MaKayla McNeely had 13 points, with Keely Simmons and Kerstin Huffman scoring 12 each for Lawson.

In the girl's consolation semifinals on Wednesday night, West Platte plays Gallatin at 4:30, with Carrollton and Richmond dueling at 7:30. In Thursday's championship semifinals, Lawson and Hamilton play at 4:30, with North Platte drawing Trenton at 7:30 (with coverage of the Lady Panthers/Lady Bulldogs contest on Hot Country Z 101.7).

In boy's quarterfinal play on Tuesday night, West Platte withstood a strong challenge from eighth-seeded Hamilton, with the Blue Jays advancing with a 70-51 win. Adam Roe led West Platte with 23 points. Jaran Richman had 16 points to pace Penney. The Blue Jays advance to play the Trenton Bulldogs on Thursday night at 6 o'clock (coverage on Hot Country Z 101.7). The Hornets will play Gallatin on Wednesday night at 9 o'clock.

The Lawson boys rolled past Carrollton, 65-19. Andy Schmitz and Spencer Wood led a balanced Cardinal attack with 10 points each. Lawson advances to play three-seed Richmond in a 9 o'clock semifinal on Thursday night. Carrollton's boys will play North Platte on Wednesday night at 6 o'clock.
