Kirksville attorney Kristen "Kadie" Campbell Johnson, 33, and Riley Johnson, 36, her husband, were both found dead in what authorities believe to be a murder-suicide after responding to a report of shots fired at 1:30 a.m. Sunday on Burk Trail south of Kirksville.

Adair County Coroner Brian Noe said Wednesday that preliminary autopsy results confirmed Kristen Campbell Johnson was shot seven times, while Riley Johnson was shot once in the head. Noe said it appears Riley Johnson was the shooter.

Noe said the preliminary report was not able to determine if Kristen Campbell Johnson was facing Riley Johnson at the time the shots were fired. Entry and exit wound data will be part of the final report, which will include toxicology results, and is expected in about two months.

Law enforcement arrived at the scene shortly after the call and found the home locked. Adair County Sheriff Robert Hardwick said they gained entry and located three small children belonging to the deceased, in addition to two other adults, during a search of the residence. Those five individuals were unharmed.

Hardwick said circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
