Playing in the final game on the first day of 2013 Holiday Hoops, the Trenton Lady Bulldogs were looking for a bounce-back effort, coming off a road loss at Gallatin four nights earlier.

Not only did Trenton play much better on Monday night, they picked up their biggest win of the season, against the St. Joseph Lafayette Fighting Irish, 49-43. The win improves THS to 7-2 on the season, and gives Lafayette its first loss, with the Irish now at 4-1. Earlier in the month, the Fighting Irish had won the Smithville Invitational Tournament.

Monday night's game was close throughout, with neither team able to open up a double-digit lead at any point in the game. An important stretch for Trenton came late in the second quarter, as the Irish were able to build a lead with the Lady Bulldogs held scoreless for the first 3 1/2 minutes of the quarter, but Trenton, behind an eight-point spurt from McKinley Hurley, scored 16 points before the half to take a 26-25 lead into the break.

Behind clutch scoring from Makaila Capeder, timely baskets from Whitley Richman and Ally Ockenfels, and clutch fourth-quarter play from Madi Trump, the Lady Bulldogs grabbed the victory. Capeder led Trenton with 16 points, while Hurley had 11. Trump scored 8, Richman six, Ockenfels five, and Lexi Tolson two points. For Lafayette, Maddie Book and Ashlyn Dotson both scored 11 points, with Amber Kneale adding 10.

Perhaps the most-important stat of the night for a Trenton squad that has been inconsistent from the free throw line, the Lady Bulldogs were a combined 15-of-17 from the stripe, with Trump and Hurley hitting all NINE of their free throw attempts (Hurley 5-of-5 and Trump 4-of-4). Ockenfels was 4-of-4 from the line, with Capeder 2-of-3.

Trenton is next in action on Saturday, hosting the Warrenton Lady Warriors at the Ketcham Community Center at 11:00 AM. The Trenton boys battle Warrenton at 12:30. Those games will be broadcast LIVE on KTTN FM 92.3 and Monday night's Lady Bulldog victory was broadcast on KTTN-FM.
