Sports : Penney Hornets Open KCI Basketball Tournament With Quarterfinal Losses

The Penney High School Hornet basketball teams tasted defeat in Saturday's quarterfinals at the KCI Conference basketball tournament at North Platte High School in Dearborn.

The Hamilton boys were dumped by West Platte by a final score of 73-45. For the Blue Jays, Adam Roe scored 22 points, with Dillon Crockett and Colton Goodlet both adding 13, and Bryce Cashman 10. Hamilton was led by Telly Harper's 15 points and Korby Ford with 12.

West Platte will play Mid-Buchanan on Tuesday night at 6 o'clock in the semifinals. The Dragons advanced with a 78-51 win over North Platte.

The other boys quarterfinals went to the Lawson Cardinals, 65-47 over Lathrop; and the East Buchanan Bulldogs, by a 80-60 final score against Plattsburg. Lawson and East Buchanan will meet on Tuesday night at 9 o'clock.

In Monday night's consolation semifinals, North Platte beat Hamilton in overtime, 61-56, dropping the Hornets to 0-3 on the season. Jaran Richman led Penney with 17 points, with Telly Harper scoring 15, and Colin Graham 11. Lathrop beat Plattsburg, 56-46, setting up the boy's consolation final on Thursday night at 6:30 between the Panthers and the Mules.

In girl's quarterfinal games on Saturday, Penney lost a close battle with East Buchanan, 55-52. Lauren McDonald led a balanced Lady 'Dawgs offense with 13 points. For Hamiton, Shelby Kruse had 22 points and Molly Ward 10.

Other girl's finals from Saturday were Lathrop over Mid-Buchanan 64-28, Lawson over West Platte, 56-26, and North Platte over Plattsburg 63-33.

In Monday night's consolation semifinal round, Hamilton won back in the win column with a 50-16 cakewalk over Mid-Buchanan. Sydney Bottorff led the Lady Hornets with 15 points, with Morgan Prather scoring 14, and Molly Ward 10 points. Hamilton will play the Plattsburg Lady Tigers in the consolation final on Thursday night at 5 o'clock. Plattsburg, on Monday night, beat West Platte, 42-32.

In the semifinals on TUESDAY night, games from Dearborn will be:

GIRLS at 4:30: Lathrop vs. East Buchanan
BOYS at 6:00: West Platte vs. Mid-Buchanan
GIRLS at 7:30: Lawson vs. North Platte
BOYS at 9:00: Lawson vs. East Buchanan
