A last second bank-shot by sophomore Ally Ockenfels gave the Trenton Lady Bulldogs the Gallatin Invitational Tournament championship on Saturday afternoon, 47-45 over Gallatin, in a game broadcast on Z 101.7 FM and www.kgozfm.com.
Gallatin had a ferocious rally in the fourth quarter, rallying from double digits down to tie the game with eight seconds remaining. The outside shooting of Kaitlyn Hefley, who finished with 21 points, was a key factor in Gallatin's surge. Hefley hit FIVE three-point shots in the second half. Cassidy Cotton had perhaps her finest week as a Lady Bulldogs, with the Trenton senior leading her squad on Saturday with 15 points. Sara Lin had 10 points for Gallatin.
The game-winning play developed as Makaila Capeder caught a pass at the free throw line and worked the ball to the left elbow. She lobbed a pass to a well-covered Ockenfels on the left-block, with Ockenfels hitting the game-winner as the clock expired.
The win improves Trenton's record to 4-0, with Gallatin falling to 3-1. Trenton will play at unbeaten South Harrison this Tuesday night (December 10th) at 6 o'clock. That game will be covered on KTTN FM 92.3. Gallatin will host Gilman City on Tuesday night.
Cotton was named the tournament's MVP, with Capeder also representing Trenton on the team. Three Gallatin players were named. They are Kailey Salmon, Sara Lin, and Kaitlyn Hefley. Sadie Watson of Braymer completes the squad.
The Trenton boys played their most complete game of the season in a convincing 69-52 victory over Gallatin on Saturday afternoon. Tournament MVP Chase Tolson played a spectacular floor game for Trenton, scoring 23 points in the championship game victory. Wilson Utley added 14 points, with Chris Kurtz and Cree Mullenix both scoring 10 for Trenton, now 3-1 on the season. Gallatin had 20 points from Chris Cameron and 10 points from Dane Brammer in the loss, dropping the Bulldogs record to 3-1.
Joining MVP Tolson on the Gallatin Boys All-Tournament team were Chris Kurtz of Trenton, Dillan Hall of Braymer, Adam Crawford of Newtown-Harris, Logan O'Dell of Braymer, and Chris Cameron of Gallatin. Newtown-Harris High School won the 2013 Sportsmanship Award.
