The officers were not hurt in the 2:20 a.m. shooting at Independence and Cypress avenues. The suspect’s injuries were life-threatening, Chief Darryl Forté said on Twitter.

Officers had responded about 1:35 a.m. to a convenience store in the 1700 block of Independence Avenue to investigate a report of an armed carjacking.

The victim told officers that he was stopped at the intersection of Independence and Brooklyn Avenue when a woman flagged him down. She reportedly told the victim she needed a ride because she “was about to get jumped.” The woman got in the passenger seat and borrowed the victim’s cellphone. A man then jumped into the back seat of the car, pointed a gun at the victim and said, “Get the (expletive) out of the car!”

The victim complied, the woman slid over into the driver’s seat and the car sped away. The 36-year-old victim walked to the store for help.

About 45 minutes later, officers spotted the stolen vehicle in an alley near Independence and Cypress. They initially thought it was unoccupied but then encountered the suspect, police said.

Two officers fired at the suspect, hitting him multiple times, police. A third officer was at the scene.

The woman involved in the carjacking apparently was not at the shooting scene.
