The discovery was made in a residential garage in the 300 block of South Cline Street. No arrests had been made, and police were in the early stages of their investigation. The Jackson County medical examiner’s office performed an autopsy on the child and examined the contents of the tub, said Police Chief Robert Driscoll.

He did not provide the gender of the child or the details surrounding the child’s death.

Officers went to the residence around 6 p.m. Monday as part of a stolen vehicle and drug investigation. While they were there, Driscoll said, officers learned about a child who was born in early October and did not survive the home birth.

The parents are cooperating with investigators. The Cass County prosecutor’s office has been alerted.

The father was released after being interviewed by investigators. The child’s mother is the hospital. Driscoll said he did not know if the hospitalization is connected to the birth.

Four children were in the home, where a small amount of drugs was found. The children are staying with a grandmother while police continue their investigation, Driscoll said.
