The North Central Missouri College women's and men's basketball teams swept a doubleheader on Wednesday night at the Ketcham Community Center in Trenton, with the Lady Pirates moving to 1-1 and the Pirates improving to 2-1.
The Lady Pirates overwhelmed the Graceland JV by a final score of 108-87, getting their offense going in a big way after struggling in a loss at KCK five nights earlier. Sophomore Samone Redditt led NCMC with 27 points, Princeton native Nancy Berwanger tossed in 19 points in her home debut, with sophomore Lexi Hope scoring 17, and Kayla Oetterer 16. Brooke Parton had 10 rebounds in the winning effort.
The Pirate men rolled past the visiting Culver-Stockton JV by a final score of 116-92. North Central featured a blanced scoring effort, with freshman forward Avion Ashford putting in 18 points with 8 rebounds, freshman center Andrew Berrry 17 points and 15 rebounds, freshman forward Xavier Newson with 17 points, five assists, and four rebounds, and sophomore forward Tyler Peterson with 16 points and 4 assists.
Freshman point guard Tyrell Thirkield was solid in the victory with 14 points and four assists, while Trenton native Austin Taul scored nine points for NCMC.
Coach Steve Richman praised Culver-Stockton's squad, nothing they hit 14 three-point shots on the Pirates, including eight in the first half. Richman said his team â€śplayed well together, had a few stretches that were sloppy with poor guarding, but overall had a good outing for 'team chemistry', sharing the ball very wellâ€ť.
The Lady Pirates and Pirates will host the visiting Southwestern Spartans on Saturday afternoon at the Ketcham Community Center, with the women's game at 2 o'clock and the men at 4. The next broadcast of NCMC basketball will be next Wednesday, November 13th, with the North Central squads playing in Iowa Falls, Iowa against the Ellsworth Panthers.
