Investigators with the Kirksville Regional Computer Crimes Unit (KRCCU) were contacted to assist with the investigation.

The owner of the phone was identified as Nathan Mead of Brookfield, Mo. Mead was currently on parole and is a registered sex offender. Mead was arrested for a violation of his parole in reference to this investigation. Mead was returned to prison for this violation.

Based on this investigation charges have been filed against Mead for Failing to Register his address as a Sex Offender within Linn County and for Failing to Register his email and social media accounts as a Sex Offender.

Also evidence of a sexual relationship was found on the cell phone between Mead and a juvenile female. This juvenile female was identified and a forensic interview was conducted. Mead has also been charged with Statutory Rape 2nd Degree, Statutory Sodomy 2nd Degree, and Child Molestation 2nd Degree in reference to those allegations.

Other charges are pending and the investigation continues.

The KRCCU and this investigation are made possible from funds provided in part from the Missouri Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and funds from Cyber Crime Grants through the Missouri Department of Public Safety. In addition to cases like this one the KRCCU provides educational presentations to adults and children on the topics of Cyber Safety and Internet Crimes.

Other agencies assisting on this investigation include Linn County Prosecuting Attorney, Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Missouri State Probation and Parole, Kirksville Office of the FBI, Trenton Child Advocacy Center and the Mercer County Division of Social Services.
