The Princeton Lady Tigers had opportunities to stay close early against the Jefferson Eagles in a Class 1 sectional softball game from Gentry Field last night, but the lack of a timely hit, and Jefferson's steady offensive onslaught combined to do in Princeton, with the visiting Eagles rolling to a 15-1 win. Princeton's season ends with a record of 13-9.
Jefferson opened the scoring early, with back-to-back singles igniting a two-out rally, and Danae Schieber (Duh-'nay She-'Burr) cracking a three run homer to left for the 3-0 lead.
Princeton cut into the advantage in the bottom of the first inning, with a Kianna Kinnison single driving home Shaylee Henley, who had doubled one batter earlier.
After Jefferson took a 4-1 lead after the top of the third, Princeton had runners at second-and-third with one out in the bottom half of the inning, but two straight strikeouts ended the threat. Down 7-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Princeton had another opportunity to get back into the game, but a bases-loaded, one out threat went up in smoke with back-to-back pop outs. Jefferson poured on the runs from there, scoring three in the fifth, and five in the seventh to cruise home for the victory.
Princeton had eight hits on the night, two each by Henley, along with Ashton Summers. Jefferson right-hander Sarah Chor went seven innings, striking out six Lady Tigers to get the win. Lady Tiger junior Chelsea Jones absorbed the loss. For Jefferson, the biggest individual night was from Schieber, who pounded the Lady Tigers all night long, with a 4-for-5 evening, three runs scored, and five RBI's.
Jefferson advances play Maysville in Saturday's state quarterfinal. The game will be played at Maysville. The Lady Wolverines doubled up GRC rival Polo 8-4 in the state sectional round on Wednesday night. The Lady Wolverines jumped out to the lead quickly against the Lady Panthers, scoring 2 runs in the first and 3 runs in the second inning. Polo scored a run in the top of the fourth, only to see Maysville put the game away with 3 runs in the bottom half. Polo rallied late, but came up well short, scoring two runs in the sixth, and a run in the seventh inning. Maysville's Rachel Boucher was 3-for-3 for the Lady Wolverines with 5 RBI's. Katie Applegarth was the winning pitcher.
